About Wicked
Was the 'Wicked Witch of the West' really wicked or
the innocent victim of a corrupt regime?
Twice voted 'Best Theatre Production for Schools' by teachers at the annual School Travel Awards,
and inspired by L. Frank Baum's "classic of children's literature" (BBC Bitesize), 'The Wonderful
Wizard of Oz', Wicked explores themes of self-esteem, discrimination, identity, fake news, and
friendship, and supports programmes of study for English, Drama, Music, PSHE, and more.
Adapted for the stage from Gregory Maguire's acclaimed novel 'Wicked: The Life and Times
of the Wicked Witch of the West' (readers 16+) by writer Winnie Holzman and featuring songs
by Stephen Schwartz, Wicked is an ingenious re-imagining of the 'Wizard of Oz' story.
"The allegorical origin story of the Wicked Witch of the West, 'Wicked'
Independent
provides a nuanced examination of good and evil, and an indictment of elitism,
racism, fascism, scapegoating and the corrupting nature of power."
The acclaimed stage musical takes learners on an unforgettable journey beyond the famous Yellow
Brick Road, placing familiar characters in an original and riveting new story that serves as both a
prequel and sequel to "one of the most influential children's stories of all time" (The Times).
Wicked is about "nurturing self-esteem, overcoming discrimination, and finding a sense of
identity" (Drama & Theatre), and tells the untold story of an initially unlikely and eventually
profound friendship between two university students, 'Galinda Upland' and 'Elphaba Thropp',
and how their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfil their destinies
as 'Glinda The Good' and the 'Wicked Witch of the West'.
A two-part Universal Pictures film version of Wicked, starring Cynthia Erivo and
Ariana Grande, was released in November 2024, with the second part scheduled for release in November 2025.
Did you know?
Wicked has been a finalist in the category 'Best Theatre Production for
Schools' every year since the School Travel Awards began, winning twice.
In 2025, 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz', L. Frank Baum's classic children's
fantasy, celebrates 125 years since it was first published.
In Baum's story (and in Wicked), the famous 'slippers' are silver. In the 1939
film adaptation they became ruby to make better use of TECHNICOLOR™.
